When we gather as one for Mass, having a team of people helping with different parts of the Mass helps to enrich our individual and shared experience of the Mass.
Below are the opportunities to serve as a Mass volunteer. If you feel called to support the Church in one or more of these ministries, use the form on our Contact Us page to indicate your interest. Training is provided for all Mass ministries.
The primary role of the altar server is to assist the priest during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Young people (4th grade and older who have received First Holy Communion) are encouraged to serve. This is a great way for youth to learn more about the Mass through hands-on participation. Adults may also serve, especially at daily Mass or funerals.
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, or Eucharistic Ministers, assist the priest in bringing the sacrament of the precious Body and Blood of Christ to the People of God. This ministry must be regarded with the utmost dignity and reverence. Confirmed Catholics 18 and older are invited to consider this ministry.
Lectors are members of the laity who proclaim the scriptures in the liturgy, assist with the Prayers of the Faithful, and may read announcements before Mass. Lectors study and practice their assigned readings in advance. Those who speak clearly and are comfortable reading in front of people are encouraged to consider this ministry.
Ushers assist during the Mass in several ways: helping individuals find a seat, inviting people to be gift bearers, taking up the collection, guiding the Communion procession, and passing out bulletins. Adults are needed for key parts of ushering (i.e. taking up the collection); however, youth can participate alongside adults.
Greeters are often the first people we encounter on weekends as we enter for Mass. Creating a welcoming presence is a simple yet important way to help at Mass, and the time commitment is minimal. Individuals, youth, adults, couples, and families who enjoy welcoming others are invited to be part of this ministry.
Gift bearers bring up the offerings of bread and wine during the Preparation of the Gifts. Gift bearers are selected immediately before each Mass. If you wish to be a gift bearer, please contact an usher at least 10 minutes before Mass. Ushers will then guide you on when to meet them during the Mass.
If you'd like to reserve being a gift bearer on a special occasion (birthday, anniversary, or when the Mass is being said for someone you know), please contact the parish office at 715-637-3255 so we may notify the usher team in advance.
The sacristan, always under the general direction of the clergy, undertakes the overall preparation and arrangement of liturgical celebrations, including all that is needed for special days.
